Café Batavia is a classic restaurant located in the heart of Jakarta's historic Kota Tua district. Housed in a Dutch colonial building dating back to 1837, it offers an elegant and old-world setting with high ceilings. The restaurant serves both Indonesian and Western cuisine, attracting over 700 guests daily, including notable figures such as the Queen of Sweden and various diplomats.
Beautiful ambience in this colonial house overlooking the governor's square. The vibe made you feel like an old time Traveller setting foot on Java island..Food wise, all is tasty and service is top notch. Prepare for spending some money though!!

We were here during lunch time, quite full but there were still empty tables. The waitress told us it would take about 30' for food hence we only ordered drinks.Kids ordered some Oreo strawberry drinks they said they were creamy n nice. Avocado coffee was good.Probably in a fine dining level, most of the drinks costs >Rp 50k with taxes and service. The restaurant is clean, perhaps famous for its classic decoration with high windows and comfortable chairs. And walls mostly covered with photos of classic objects, unique or famous people all to the toilets walls although some of them are not for kids. The waiters were very courteous and nice offered help taking pictures and suggested nice spots.

A very history cafe situated within an art-deco colonial building. Amazing decor and atmosphere, you can travel back in time to experience the old Jakarta. A great hangout place. The food was decent, a bit expensive for what we got. The fried rice was way too oily. The drinks were awesome though.

Can be considered as a "posh" restaurant in the area. You can definitely feel welcomed the moment you step foot even if you are just dining solo. Staff are very accommodating and will recommend all the right food fit for the table.I am super thankful for the girl server who took my order because she recommended me a good dish that is fit for just a solo diner because apparently I was picking out huge servings the first time 😅 She also recommended a good and light iced coffee which I liked!Food was superb huhu the fried rice was super delicious! 🥹 They have different food options from local cuisine to international ones. They also have a bar food drinks.Cant recommend them enough!

The cafe set up is something unique and different. There are lots of photo of 1980s and 1970s framed and hung over the wall which is one attraction. Next is, it has a good view of the Jakarta history museum. Everything looks photogenic and clean. The food is great with lovely staff.

5 for history and atmosphere, 3 for service and food. Historic old restaurant with great views for people watching. Most of our food tasted like it had been cooked hours ago and rewarmed. The peanut sauce was too sweet. Had to reorder drinks 3 times to get them. Go for the atmosphere, not for the food or service.Interestingly, the old neon sign was removed right outside our window, so I have included some photos of that process.

We came thinking and read previous reviews. Very very disappointing 😞 honestly I don't think any celebrity was ever in here, all pics were not authentic at all, none of them were even in the restaurant. Pics of celebrities from all over the world fabricated into frames and put on the walls, not even autographed by any of them. I not were why the fame except for the fact it's been there for a long time and foreigners are coming to it. They have a very strict rule, you can't sit next windows without ordering drinks and food each individual by force. We told them ok to do and requested little ice however all drinks came with extra ice!! They just don't listen! The chicken came very stiff and super fried where there is NO MEAT what so ever from the deep fry. Only the libester was descent however very Over priced for why they made. Nothing else comes with the plate.Do not recommend!

Our first time at Batavia Cafe and we loved it. Not acclimatised to the heat of Jakarta yet, so it was a welcome relief to be in the cool. Views over the square were very nice from our window table. The food was a culinary explosion of taste, colour and smell. Our server Yulia was very helpful and friendly. We will be back!

Nice place for a romantic dinner. They have live band too. Food presentation was nice and we love the truffle sauce.Smoking place on the GF and non smoking on the 1st floor with nice view of the square.

If you are coming to Kota Tua then you really must check out Cafe Batavia to step back in time. The building, decor and music have a wonderful nostalgic air and atmosphere. I really felt that I should have dressed in linen and donned a Panama hat while listening to the smooth orchestral swing of Glen Miller. The staff here are excellent and pleasant, dressed suitably for the style of the times. The food is fantastic and it was well worth the price. The bitterballen are delicious as were the sate. There are also plenty of cakes to enjoy.Looking out the windows from upstairs in the non smoking area is a real throwback to the Dutch colonial style. The only downside is that the music outside is so loud and the singing is awful which detracts from the atmosphere inside the Cafe unfortunately. The music could probably be a bit louder inside but again, you don't want it to ruin the atmosphere. It seems crazy to mention the men's toilet, but equally crazy not to mention it. Gents, you have to see this crazy and sensational toilet with the most fantastic urinal and flush that I've ever seen. Seriously.I fell in love with Cafe Batavia and wish that there was something similar in my own country!

I love the vibes, it feels vintage.Price is international standard, and it is understandable due to lots of international guest.Sate ayam is tender and sauce is thickWill definitely come back again for another dishes

Such a lovely cafe in Old Town! The vibe was vintage and posh—perhaps remnants of its colonial past. But the food was nothing colonial. They serve one of the most interesting local cuisines—from a local sweet and spicy salad to a coated shrimp that were all delicious. Surprisingly, the price was not too bad. Inside the shop, you’ll find the most creative interior. Definitely would come back.

Cafe Batavia in Jakarta is a true gem that combines historic charm with a vibrant, lively atmosphere. From the moment you step inside, you’re transported back in time, surrounded by elegant colonial-era decor that exudes a unique old-world charm. But what really makes this place stand out are the people and the incredible vibes. The staff at Cafe Batavia are some of the friendliest you’ll meet. They’re warm, welcoming, and go out of their way to make sure you’re comfortable and enjoying your time. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular, they treat you like an old friend, which adds to the overall experience. The live music is another highlight. During my visit, the music set the perfect tone for the evening, creating a lively yet relaxed ambiance. The band was fantastic, playing a great mix of tunes that had everyone tapping their feet and soaking in the good vibes. It’s the kind of place where the music enhances the atmosphere rather than overpowering it, making it easy to enjoy conversation or simply sit back and listen. The combination of excellent service, great live music, and the unique setting makes Cafe Batavia a must-visit when in Jakarta. Whether you’re there for a meal, a drink, or just to enjoy the ambiance, you’re in for a memorable experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a slice of Jakarta’s rich history with a side of fantastic vibes!

Lovely place! But quite overpriced, no decaf coffee, and they said the upstairs was full even though they had empty tables. A must for tourists, but don’t expect much else.

Food is good, big portion. Service is excellent, one of the waiter kindly show us around, explain history of batavia, even offering to took a picture of us! Good job! The ambience of the restaurant is very good too. Classic interior along with the slow music, very calming.

The employees were super kind, and loved the atmosphere of the cafe but there was one thing that caught my attention. Some of the tables along the window side at the second floor were not very clean. In general their food was great, reasonable price. A good place to take a rest during the trip in Jakarta.

Really nice café with a view on the main square. The staff is dressed in traditional clothes and the clientele is a mix of foreigners and locals. Prices are a bit higher than average but the food is really good. We had cakes (delicious!) and drinks (also really good!)

Amazing place when it comes to ambience and decor. Food left me a bit disappointed, I have ordered Rendang I was expecting tender juicy meat and I received dry and hard meat, just read on the internet that this is how it supposed to be according to the original recipe. Anyway recommend to anyone visiting Jakarta.

A restaurant that takes you back to the past with its elegant colonial-style design. The wooden interior, decor, lighting and the music are coherent and gave a wonderful experience when we were here. First floor is a smoking area while second floor is non-smoking. Spacious area, try to get the seats near the window for great view of the Jakarta History Museum too.Went for a coffee and pastry, the filter coffee was delightful and flavourful. Wonderful presentation too. Ordered the banana cake and it's soft, moist and not too sweet. Service staff were quick and attentive. Price is a bit expensive for Jakarta standard but I would come back because of the experience! Would recommend this for visitors and residents alike who wants to experience Dutch-style building.

i actually went to this cafe a little over a year ago so i don’t know if my review would be relevant or not haha. anyway i just wanna leave some prints since i had a really good time with my friend at this cafe.firstly you definitely go for the ambiance first and food second since this place is right in front of the famous building in Kota Tua.the cafe/restaurant is adorned with antique furniture and a lot of pictures of people and things from the old days. the decorations stretched even further to the toilet. 😂the food is okay, not something that i’ll write home about considering their price tags. such dining experience definitely fits for celebrations or if you’re just bougie like that. 😂 but the staff are incredibly nice so that’s another point!thanks!!

The services were fast. Meals served promptly, too. Other than that, the rest of the meals were pleasant. Food and drinks were great!Price + 10% services charges + 10% governance tax. It is an old colonial interior and ambience cafe with great service and nice food but also pricy at the same time specially for the beverages. They also provide various of alcoholic beverages and various of cake that suit your coffee or tea perfectly. This cafe is situated in Kota Lama area and one of the most iconic spot here. If you drive a car, the only choice is to use their valet service which cost 40K.

Food is fantastic, and the service was great. Christopher impressed us with memorising our orders and side notes for each course. Really fun touch to have the barman (Ferry) come over with the bar cart and make the cocktail in front of us! Lovely historical building, a must see in Jakarta

I saw this place in a Youtube video when a travel blogger recommended it. Last year we did not take the chance to visit it but this year I definitely wanted to give it a try.Even though there was no table available we managed to dine in by putting my name on a waitlist. After approximately half an hour I got a call and we were able to order our meal. The staff gave us probably the best table right in the corner of the restaurant by the window overlooking the big Kota Tua square with its famous and colourful bicycles. The building but also the restaurant are completely kept in origin from the colonial style even though I do not approve any sort of colonialism. The staff was very polite and friendly at all times and paid attention to detail. The food was exceptionally good and tasty. You see how the chefs give their best not only with the taste but also with the presentation of the dishes.I can recommend the corn fritters, the fried tempe and the chicken sate served with rice. My family had the nasi goreng which they liked very much, too.Price wise this restaurant is on a higher level but the quality of the food justified it completely.

The ambience was quite pleasant, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The service was excellent, with very attentive servers who made sure all our needs were met promptly. However, I found the food to be underwhelming. Despite the promise of authentic Indonesian cuisine, the flavors did not meet my expectations. The taste was below standard, and even the bowl of rice was hard and not particularly enjoyable. For tourists hoping to experience true Indonesian flavors, this restaurant might not deliver an authentic taste of the cuisine. Additionally, please be aware that there is a 10% tax and a 10% service fee added to the bill.Overall, while the service and setting werecommendable, the food quality needssignificant improvement to truly reflect therichness of Indonesian cuisine.

This is an establishment that one has to visit in Jakarta. Located in the historic Kota Tua, which can be a challenge to get to, but it will be worth your while. The menu is quite extensive and we ordered quite a bit. Safe to say, all the food were really good. The exceptional dishes were the bali duck, the grilled ribs and the tongue steak, it actually melts in your mouth. But the star was definitely the durian ketan, layers of heavenly gulitinous rice, durian curd and coconut cream, to die for.Not only the food were exquisite, the dining experience was also excellent. The decor would bring you to back in time and the serving staff were friendly and efficient. A dining experience not to be missed

Food was okay but what stand out the most was it’s interior design and atmosphere. Staff was professional as well. If you sit on window seat during public holidays you need to order one main dish and a drink per person. (Which we did)Price was a little bit above average but it’s kinda worth it. Would be great if they offered a dessert menu as well

The walls are so satisfying to look at, a cafe with a nostalgic atmosphere and amazing food. We tried fried ox tail soup and beef tongue steak with Dutch potato, they're all beyond our expectations. The staff is friendly and helpful. I wish I would stay in Jakarta longer to visit this place more.

5* for atmosphere - Great place to have lunch/dinner/drinks in Old town Jakarta, in midst of unique interior and lively atmosphere overlooking the old square front of Jakarta History museum (was Batavia’s Stadthuys/cityhall from 17th century).4* for food - Food were great mix of indonesian menu, best of the best during our dinner were the Sulawesi style grilled fish and Oxtail soup, the reason for not putting a 5* was lamb satay, which was a little bland in comparison to local satay’s specialist place in downtown Jkt.5* service - Ayu, our food selection was made perfect by superb help and recommendations from Ayu, the staff who took good care of us, went all the way to explain the foods and drinks selection, and the dinner became a perfect ending of the day outing with our friend from Germany, who was unbelievably happy with the introductory to Indonesian cuisines. Top notch service from Ayu!

Great food and vibes here! We spent a couple of hours just enjoying the food and drinks while soaking in the heritage of what it feels like being a colonizer (extremely rare experience!) and being amongst them (a lot of European tourists). The ground floor is air-conditioned with smoking allowed, while the floor upstairs is a no smoking space. From what we understood you'll have to book a table ahead if you'd prefer a table upstairs. We walked-in and settled for a table downstairs. However if you're looking for a nice photo by the window, upstairs would be the best choice.Food was great. Service was good as well.
